What gets deducted from your Malaysian salary

Your gross salary is not what lands in your bank account. Four things come out before you are paid:

  • EPF (KWSP) - 11% of wages goes into your retirement savings, with your employer adding 12-13% on top.
  • SOCSO (PERKESO) - about 0.5% of wages, capped at a RM6,000 wage ceiling, for injury and invalidity cover.
  • EIS - 0.2% of wages (also capped at RM6,000) for the Employment Insurance System.
  • PCB / MTD - the monthly income tax your employer withholds and pays to LHDN for you.

EPF is not lost money - it is your own savings. SOCSO and EIS are small. PCB is a prepayment of your annual income tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EPF deducted from my salary a loss?
No. EPF is your own retirement savings. The 11% leaves your monthly pay but stays yours and earns annual dividends.
Can I reduce my PCB?
Yes. Declaring tax reliefs to your employer through Form TP1 lowers your monthly PCB. You can also claim everything back when you file your annual return.
Why are my SOCSO and EIS so small?
Both are capped at a RM6,000 monthly wage ceiling, so maximum employee SOCSO is around RM30 and EIS around RM12 a month.
Does this include bonuses?
No, it estimates a regular monthly salary. Bonuses also have EPF and tax deducted, but PCB on a bonus is calculated separately.
